Have talked with Carmen and Brent about it. Do we give her another chance? What does the Bible say about forgiveness - 70 times 70 - but does forgiving mean you allow someone back into your home that you don't trust? Last week in Bible Study, we talked about what Jesus said about turning the other cheek - about doing to others as you want them to do to you - how does that speak to this situation. How would I want to be treated if I were the thief?

One seminar I went to said that forgiving means you give up the right to retaliation - I don't feel I've retaliated, haven't demanded the money back, haven't demanded that she be arrested for theft, haven't withdrawn fellowship - does forgiving mean that we go on as if nothing has happened?

We decided to wait and see how she is at church on Sunday - is she there? Does she approach and ask for forgiveness? Does she seek out our pastor for counseling and help? I don't know the right thing to do - my heart is still heavy. Oh Lord, give us wisdom to do the right thing.

Highs and Lows

I'm going to start with the Low because that's what I'm feeling now. I just had to confront the lady who has been cleaning for us about stealing. I keep some cash in my drawer in a basket - I've done it since I got here - didn't think much about it. I keep it there because I don't want to carry much on me when I go out. I suspected that she may be going into my drawer awhile back when I noticed that some papers in the drawer were moved - but I didn't want to believe that this lady - this really nice lady from church - who had a child in our preschool - who seemed so genuine and nice would steal from me. Before I left for the US for Christmas, I had withdrawn quite a bit of cash to have at Youth Summer Camp in case there was an emergency. I left 400 Rand in my drawer when I left for home because I hadn't needed it during camp. When I returned, there was only R200. I asked Carmen if she had needed it and she said no - didn't know anything about it. I wasn't absolutely positive there had been R400 - I thought maybe I had forgotten during the month at home and maybe it really was only R200. The nagging thoughts were there. This lady had cleaned my room the day I left for home - she was there when I left.

Last week I decided to lay a trap - to put a certain amount of money in the basket - write down how much it was (because I was afraid I would forget and I wanted to be certain). I put 5 twenties in the basket - I checked it mid day after she had cleaned my room and all 5 were there - I was happy - maybe I had been wrong to suspect. I had to go out, so I left the 5 twenties there - when I returned that evening after she had left, I discovered there were only 4. Oh no, did she really steal from me??? I mentioned it to Carmen - she said that this lady had asked her for R20 for transport that day and she gave it to her - so why did she steal my twenty?? Because it was easy???

I have to tell you that I still wasn't convinced enough to confront her. I was afraid that when I checked the money at mid day, that perhaps I had removed a twenty - maybe she didn't really steal. I know, I know, I think I was in denial - just didn't want to believe this was happening!

So today, I set the trap again. I left a few 10's a few 20's and a couple of 50's - wrote down exactly what was there - checked it several times last night and didn't touch it today until late. She was still here ironing when I got back from a meeting - I closed my door and checked the basket - counted out the money - checked the paper I had written the amounts on - rechecked it several times - my heart was heavy, there was R30 missing. I got on my knees to ask God to help me with the confrontation. I had prayed earlier today for God to make it clear that she was stealing - I didn't want to accuse an innocent person. It was clear. I had to confront her.

It was with a heavy heart that I sat her down and told her that I knew there was money missing. At first she seemed to deny, but then she just kept saying, "Sorry Mam" over and over. She did admit to the other amounts too - I don't know if there is more - but the total that I do know about, was R250. I told her that I didn't hate her, I don't. I told her that I was sad for her, that my heart was heavy - that is true. I am devastated that someone from church - someone I served communion to yesterday would steal from me. I will pray for her - will ask God to teach her the right ways - that she will learn from this - that she won't do it to someone else. She won't be working for us anymore - we can't trust her. Now, there is another unemployed mom out there - unemployed by her own choice - because she is a thief.

After writing all of the above and replaying the confrontation in my mind, I realized that I never asked her for the R30 back that she took today - just didn't think about it at the time. And you know, wouldn't she have wanted to give it back if she really was sorry??? hmmmm...

Okay, now the High - gotta end on a good note, right? Since coming back to SA, I've been kind of out of sorts. Its probably because of leaving home, getting back to the old routine, knowing that I'll be leaving in about 6 months, all those things. But it was also because I really didn't spend a lot of time with the Lord while I was at home. Sure, I went to church a bunch of times, prayed some, even read my Bible some - but I didn't really spend good intentional time in God's presence - I didn't dwell with him - I was out of my regular quiet time routine. I can tell you, it really made a difference in my attitude, my feelings about myself, my surroundings, others, etc.

So, last Saturday evening- I was alone here at the flat - I sat outside on the balcony in the cool late afternoon/early evening. I started reading the Beth Moore book "A Heart Like His" - I read scripture - I listened to music - I prayed - I gazed at the sky - I was silent - I felt the presence of God - it was the best feeling I've had in a long time. I felt like I could almost see Jesus - my heart was full - my emotions were running - it was a bit overwhelming. I am so thankful to Jesus for coming to me - for the presence of the Holy Spirit that evening. I needed it - I needed to reconnect with my Lord - I needed to focus on Him and not on me or anything else.

I know that living in God's presence is best - it is how I survive - it is how I thrive. Each day, I know I must dwell intentionally in God's presence - putting aside all else for a time for just me and my Lord. Preparing continually to deal with the Lows and to look forward to the Highs.

Welcome to 2009

Its January...a new year...okay, so I haven't really been updating this much lately - if you're curious why, send me an email at shuttlewoman@gmail.com and I'll tell you.

Thanks to my friend Randy, you can see how I spent many hours during my holiday time at home - Talli and I enjoyed chill time together.

Random thoughts...

I'm glad to be back in South Africa, but am wondering what the next 6 months will be like. As I wrote before, Cheryl is leaving Troyeville. A new pastor has been called and will start in April. So what happens in February and March? What will it be like working with a new pastor? Will the church work to find someone to care for the youth before I leave so that the transition will be easier for them?

I want to get in shape for 2009 - even come back home looking fit - of course, I've wanted that before - will I get my bum in gear and take my mouth out of gear to make it happen? time will tell.

What will my life look like in July 2009 - will I be employed? will I be unemployed and wondering what's next - how long will it take to find a place of service? Where will I be? Will there be less of me?

American beef appeals to me much more than SA beef - while at home, enjoyed a steak at Outback with my good friends Michelle and Mark Smith! Also had a very good burger at Checkers in the Atlanta airport.

Pork was also a treat - Smokey Pig with Amber and Erin, Texas Roadhouse with Sara, and Adams Ribs with Edie, Gayle, and Becky.

No wonder I am fat - most of my visiting at home with family and friends revolved around eating - wonder what else we could have done together???

The friends I share a flat with have gotten addicted to LOST thanks to the DVDs my friend Wanda sent...does that mean I'm a good influence or a bad one?

I haven't played guitar since November - I think my fingers are going to really hurt when I start playing again!

Is the car you have that is paid for really the best one economically? I've spent about $2000 on my Chevy Blazer that is currently sitting in my parent's driveway - two grand on a vehicle that sits all day waiting for me to get back.

I went to see Marley & Me with my mom this week - afterwards, I wondered, is the pain of losing the dog you love worth giving your heart away to one? The answer, YES! I have experienced great pain at losing my canine friends, Pepper, Caesar, and mostly Chelsea - but oh the memories I have - the love I gave and received - the joy of furry friends - painful to lose, yes, but I wouldn't trade the experience.

I was wondering why it is more difficult to talk about Jesus and my faith in him with my niece and nephew than it is to talk about him with my youth. They are all teenagers after all. I realized that the reason is that my youth, by their presence at church, have given me permission or even demonstrated an interest and my niece and nephew have not. I've ventured to bring up the subject with each of them once or twice - I long for them to know Jesus. Its hard knowing that they don't seem that interested.

The best part about South Africa? The friends I have made here, no contest.

The Day After Thanksgiving

Wow, can't believe its been over a month since I wrote anything - for those of you who check occasionally, sorry its been so long. I think that the biggest threat to my blogging is Facebook - yep, I've joined it and it is a good way to keep in touch - the only problem is that it keeps me in touch with other folks on Facebook, but not everyone.

So, what's been going on in the past month..

Went to Cape Town with Cheryl - spent one week in Blouberg Strand with Steve and Phil (short for Phyllis) - went to several meetings with folks discussing the possibilities for a ministry like Door of Hope - to establish a home to take in abandoned babies and orphans and work to get them adopted. The main problem we ran into is that the houses that the local Baptist association have available all have strings attached and are in unsafe areas for volunteers. There is one house the association owns and is currenly using for offices - they plan to leave the house eventually, but most likely have plans to sell it. We submitted a proposal to them to designate this house as a children's home - it is in a nice suburb and could be renovated to be a nice babyhouse - it is unlikely they will do this, but as Cheryl says, if God wants us to have a baby house in Cape Town, God will provide a way. After the week in Blouberg, Cheryl and I went to Gordon's Bay and spent a few days in her cousin's flat - had very nice views of the sea.

While we were there, we went to a book launch for a book written by Rachel Colenzo about her and her husbands near death experience clinging to the side of a mountain in a storm in Italy - she is donated a portion of the profits to Door of Hope. It was pretty cool going to the launch - I felt rather cultured. Rachel was very nice and down to earth. She is also doing about 12 hikes in the mountains around Cape Town to raise money for Door of Hope - the project is called Mountains of Hope - they have raised almost R100,000 so far.

Things are pretty much the same here in the flat - I spend quite a bit of time in my room - its more peaceful than out in the lounge with 2 year old Jordan and 3 month old Caeden. The good thing is that Jordan and I have become friends and he likes to hang out with me - I like to hang out with him too except for when he's having a tantrum - unfortuately, those happen quite a bit. I think he gets frustrated being cooped up inside since he used to live in the country and probably had a lot more freedom to go outside and play.

I think one of the biggest adjustments I face in the future is that Cheryl has submitted her resignation to the church effective January 31st. The leadership are now meeting to discuss the calling of another pastor. It will be strange for me to serve with someone else at Troyeville. Fortunately, I know the guy they are talking to a bit - if he is called, at least it won't be a stranger. I was telling Cheryl the other day that if we want to see each other after she goes, that it will have to be intentional because we have little reason to meet - the only organization we will work together on is International Door of Hope and right now, there is not a lot going on with that. Next year will be strange I think.

Its camp time for the YOuth - there are 20 signed up - hopefully 20 will show up on Saturday morning the 6th to go - I will be frustrated and a bit angry if someone just doesn't show up because I've already paid R770 for them to go and feel like it would be irresponsible and a waste of God's money - okay, not really a waste, I guess since it is going to the Baptist Union - but I'm sure they have paid for the student to be at camp and can't recoup their money either.

I had to make a really tough decision about camp - one of my guys was short almost R100 of the R300 he needed to raise to go. I had told the youth over and over again at every meeting we had that everything had to be in by November 2nd. I had given them many many opportunities to work at the church to earn their fees - I even allowed them to have friends work for them - even gave them books to read and write about to earn fees. This guy had ample opportunities to get his fees in and he waited until the last day to realize he didn't have enough. He did the same thing last year and I let him slide - couldn't in good conscience do it again. It was really hard to tell him he couldn't go - but I explained to him that he made choices all along the way the past 3 months that led to this conclusion. What really stinks is that he is graduating from high school and his family is moving to another area, so I may not see him again - he has so much potential, but is drawn into poor choices by non Christian friends - seems he's too weak willed to stand up to them and make good choices. Please pray for him - he is a good hearted guy, but he struggles - he waffles on his faith and I'm not sure if he has really chosen to follow Jesus or not.

Okay, so this week, I've been putting together Christmas bags for all the kids at church. We were able to get one suitcase full of stuff from the states. THANKS to my mom and dad's Sunday school class at Mt Vernon for collecting stuff at the last minute so a team could bring it over. That was quite frustrating! I contacted the mission board back in August asking if the teams coming could bring stuff - the team leaders were contacted, but it took several weeks for anyone to get back to me on it - finally one of the last teams coming agreed a week before they left to bring stuff - mom had to mobilize the class quickly to get stuff. The frustrating thing is that teams bring a bunch of donations, but they don't ask first what we need - so they end up bringing stuff we don't need or things that could wait until more urgent needs are filled. We could have gotten a lot more donations for the kids if I'd had better luck working with the teams - oh well - we got stuff and I was able to suppliment with stuff from here, so all the kids will get something.

I've got youth tonight - November 28th - we're going to have our Christmas Party since this is the last Friday night together before camp and before I leave for home for Christmas! I've been trying to think of something for us to do - figured Christmas Pictionary might be fun. Also have gifts for them and candy - hopefully they will appreciate it!

Guess that's all for now. HOpefully my posts will be a bit more regular - but may be not. who knows. I can think of a few reasons...

I can - its convenient - we have a new one up the road from the flat
Its a taste from home - the burgers at McDs taste the same here as they do at home - the other burgers here do not
I like it - okay call me strange, I've had enough McD's in my life to never want any again - being a youth minister will do that do you - but I like it
Its a diversion - I spent all day at home, okay not all day, most of the day -but the afternoon was getting long and I wanted out - took Prudence (she cleans for us now) to the taxi stand and then cruised up to McDs.

Oh yeah, and I was hungry - guess that's the best reason...maybe

anyway, McD's - not healthy for my heart, but healthy for my psyche - sometimes you just need that.

Watching LOST

So I'm sitting here in my room watching an episode of LOST - season 3 - I've almost watched all the ones my friend Wanda sent to me - then what? Evenings will probably be pretty boring soon - television is not so good here and I don't have my Sara and Amber to talk to or watch videos with any more - so...hmmm. I really don't know - maybe I'll borrow several seasons of The Office from Russell.

So, its been awhile since I wrote - mainly b/c I've been putting things on FaceBook and writing emails - that doesn't bode well for my blogging.

I'm into my second year hear - am doing pretty much the same thing - Youth, leading the Worship Team at church, helping with Children's church and serving on the International Door of Hope Board. Of course that board position doesn't really entail anything much except going to meetings and getting frustrated by the lack of progress on the house in Cape Town. Its been quite frustrating - waiting for the local Baptist association to decide whether they want to provide their house for a children's home to be run by International Door of Hope or not - they keep meeting and promising to call and give the verdict, and they don't follow through. It makes me wonder if we really want to enter into any type of agreement with them - if they won't follow through and constantly drag their feet.

I wonder sometimes if the Lord wants us in Cape Town or not - it seemed like everything was going so well - the house was there, Alison was going to be the director and she had great contacts and seemed to have a tender heart for the kids, a church in the US was helping finance things, the association wanted to work with us, several folks in CT had volunteered to help - all seemed to be coming together and then back in August, Alison decided that she didn't want to work with IDOH, that she wanted to work independently - now what? What is the right thing to do? We're seeking God's direction and wisdom - what is to happen with the kids? the house? As I said, Very Frustrating!

I was really looking forward to doing something with IDOH - at one time, I was going to go down to CT with Cheryl to help with the transition in getting Alison out, placing the kids in other homes, and then getting things set up for IDOH to reopen the house in January up to DOH standards. BUT the Baptist association in CT has been dragging its feet. I wanted to go because I wanted a new challenge -- seems I get bored with I do the same thing for awhile. Its gotten rather routine doing youth each week, figuring out music for Sundays, etc. Its not that I don't like doing what I'm doing, its just that I want more.

I sometimes wonder if I have any more ideas left for the Youth - wondering what else to tell them, how else to encourage them, what else to do on Friday nights - I struggle to come up with new ideas. Sunday mornings have been good in Sunday school - did a series called Epic from John Eldridge that my friend Wanda sent with the LOST videos. The youth seemed to like it and get something out of it. Now we're doing a study of Corinthians from a Youth Specialities book called Creative Bible Lessons in Corinthians - so far its been pretty good. John is going to lead this Sunday. Wednesday nights are also pretty good - although I don't think we have enough time in the small groups to go through the scriptures adequately - think the intro time before the video is too long. Actually, as I've said before, Wednesdays are fun for me - I love going through the scriptures with the youth and answering their questions.

Wednesdays at Troyeville

Wednesday night Bible Study is great! On Wednesdays, I usually get to church around 3 pm to meet with Cheryl and Russell to go over stuff and pray together. Then at 4ish, the worship planning team meets to pick out songs and talk about the upcoming service. This has been both good and bad - I had this vision of the team working together creatively to plan services and come up with cool worship experiences - multi sensory, etc. BUT it hasn't really worked out that way - I don't always feel very creative - neither do the others - also, its hard because we rarely know much about the sermon topics or have multi week themes. Usually I come with a list of songs that I've picked during the week and we chose from them. Sometimes someone will come up with a new idea or suggestion, but usually its just getting songs together. Oh well, at least we're meeting together to discuss things. After the 'planning' meeting, we gather with the rest of the worship team to practice the songs. Unfortunately, folks tend to straggle in around 5:15 - 5:30, so we really don't have a lot of time to practice. Its mainly working on intros and transitions it seems. I felt on this past Sunday like we hadn't even practiced on Wed. seems like the collective memory forgets whatever we went through on Wed. afternoon and we have to go through it all again on Sunday morning - can be frustrating for me! Anyway, at 6 pm after practice, we go into the prayer chapel for prayer - That is a very cool time - people from the church gathering together for prayer - sometimes there are prayers in different languages. I love that Cheryl is very committed to prayer - I think I've prayed more corporately at Troyeville than I ever have at any other church I've been to. Also look back and see that one of the youth was part of the initiative to get us gathering together for prayer on Wednesday nights - how cool is that!

After prayer from 6 - 6:30, Ivan (the church caretaker) puts out tea, coffee, bread, peanut butter and jam for us to have a light supper - some of the youth come at that time for the food, which is really only supposed to be for the ones who are already there for practice and/or prayer, but oh well - its gets them in the door. Its interesting to see how folks will make 2-3 sandwiches for themselves without regard for the fact that the food is running out and some may not get any. I've asked the youth several times to only make 1 sandwich first and to wait to make sure everyone has at least 1, but they quickly forget after a week or two and go back to old habits. Its not just the youth, though, the adults do it too. Fortunately for me, when I've come after its all gone, Ivan frequently has some bread tucked away for such times.

After the 'tea' time, we have a video of a chapter of the Gospel of Luke. The video is old - probably shot in the 70's, but it does give you a decent picture of life when Jesus walked on the earth. The dialogue is verbatim from the Bible - not sure what translation, but at least its not KJV! Actually, the narrator is reading English - while in the background, you hear the characters speaking in Aramaic, I think - adds to the authenticity some. After about a 15 - 20 minute video of a chapter, we break up into small groups to discuss questions Janice, the leader, has prepared for us. Back in January when we discussed having this type of Bible Study on Wednesdays, I told Janice I would come and lead a small group for Youth and encourage them to come.

The youth are the primary ones that do come - the adults have fallen off a bit - What's awesome is that I really don't have a small group, I have about 15-20 each week! We gather around the table and go through the questions - i answer questions they have about the passages, try to explain to them the context and meaning - I LOVE IT! I've told several people that Wed. night Bible Study is my cake - I cherish sitting around the table with the youth discussing Scripture. There are several young adults that are out of high school who come - some this is the only night they can because of work or school - so its been a great way to stay connected to youth who have matriculated (graduated) and others who have never come to youth. It has shown me one of the areas of ministry that I really enjoy and will make sure is a part of my future endeavors!

One of the things that is a little frustrating is that we usually have to wrap up around 8 and hurry out to get people home at a decent hour. I don't have time afterwards to talk with anyone much. Have had a couple of occasions when one of the youth has had some questions or needed to talk and our time has been limited by needed to leave - I find that difficult. After we break up our small groups, everyone gathers in the hall for a closing prayer. If I have someone with questions, I usually stay behind in our room with them and miss the closing prayer, but at least we've had a few moments to talk or pray together.

After the prayer, we arrange rides for people that live further out. Its not safe to walk to some places after dark, so those of us with cars give people a lift. I usually carpool with Russell or Cheryl to save petrol, so sometimes we're limited on how many people we can take.

When I get home, usually have a snack - my one pbj doesn't usually last long and chill. I'm glad I go on Wednesday nights - its a good night.

It continues to puzzle and delight me that so many youth come on Wednesday nights - some who are atheists, some who are seeking, some who are following Jesus somewhat, some who are devoted followers - all gathered to talk about scripture - no games, no activities, no competitions, just the Bible - wow! How cool is that!

Long Awaited Photos

Heading across the fields and up to the peak that we abseiled from. Most of my youth are the first generation of black kids to go through school after Apartheid ended - they have advantages that their parents didn't have - they have freedoms that their parents dreamed about and some fought for.

It can get discouraging at times. One young lady finished high school - is very articulate - poised - communicates well - seemed to have a lot going for her. I noticed yesterday that she is pregnant - she's pretty far along, actually, its surprising that I didn't notice earlier. She is not married - when I asked about the guy, if he was a good man, she said sort of. I want her to know that she is welcome - that she is loved - that her situation doesn't change the way I feel about her - it doesn't. But, oh, how I wish she had made different choices - she has exposed herself to STDs, she will bear a child and she will most likely have to raise her child alone - I'm not sure she has a job. The cycle continues - oh how I wish she had wanted badly enough to break the cycle.

One of my guys, one who was seemingly following Jesus last year - he told me about enjoying reading the Bible - now he is inconsistent in coming to church- I don't see him as much - I hear he's been getting into trouble - drinking - he has so much potential - he is a great guy - he's intelligent - I fear that the friends he has and the choices he is making will derail him - oh how I long for and pray that he will break the cycle - will finish high school - will pursue further education or a good job - will honor the women in his life and be a man of integrity.

For all of my youth, my prayer is that they will strive for the best - to not settle for the same old things. That they will wait for marriage to have sex - that they will commit themselves to following Jesus and living like he did - that they will work hard, be people of integrity, making a difference in this country - in their neighborhoods - in their schools. I guess that is the prayer of all Youth leaders - wanting the best for their kids. I see so much potential, so much good, so much talent, but so many obstacles. Oh Lord give me the strength to persevere - to share with them your truth and your love - to love them where they are and to encourage them to start a new cycle.

Yikes! Over a Month????!!!!!

Okay, wow - I can't believe is has been over a month since I wrote here - for those of you who have checked and not seen anything new - sorry! I'll try to do better. Its hard to think of what to write, so much has transpired in the past month - so my writing has little to do with nothing happening and much to do with a lot happening and my not taking the time to sit down and write. nuf said about that...what are the headlines?

Since the end of June...

The last week of June, there was a team here from Sprinhill Baptist in Charlottesville, Virginia - they did a Holiday Bible Club at Troyeville (aka VBS). It was a great team - I really enjoyed the time they were here. Russell (another Venturer working for Door of Hope and Troyeville) and I shared driving responsibilities for the team - we used the VBMB South African van - what a great thing to have over here - saves money and is very convenient. Went to the Lion and Rhino park again with the team - was my 4th time, I think. It was pretty cool, though because we went on a Saturday and I got to see them feeding the carnivores - wild dogs, white lions and cheetahs - got to see things I hadn't seen before. If this blogger tool were any good, I'd be posting pictures of that visit, but alas...it is not - perhaps I need to reconsider blogger.com - there are frequently times when I can't post pictures. Went to Carnivores Restaurant with the team - was my second time there - funny how you go see animals and then go and eat them. Tried not to eat as much this time - can get a bit overloaded on meat!

After the Virginia team left, I got busy with my project for Door of Hope International - a new ministry that will be resource provider/helper to others who are working to help orphans or vulnerable children. My project was to work with a church in Houston Texas who committed to purchasing clothing and shoes for all 61 kids at the Touch Life Centre. They sent over the money and I got to spend it - sounds fun, right? Not really - had to measure little feet and get sizes for all the kids. Many thanks to the TLC staff for helping me get sizes! I kept spreadsheets of all the data - thankful for my EDS days and learning to use those valuable tools!

I must have been to every Ackermans and PEP (inexpensive clothing stores) within a 20 KM radius of our apartment - some several times - I was able to get every child socks, underwear, jeans, a shirt, tennis shoes, and for the guys - jackets and for the girls - track suits. Couldn't find many jackets for the girls, why the track suits. That was interesting - why could I find jackets for boys and not for girls? Don't both get cold? Strange.

Oh yeah - need another picture - boo for blogger!!! I picked up a new-to-me ca on July 10th. oh yeah - more changes/news - Amber left for home on July 7th - that was not fun, losing one of my Virginia buddies - its strange being here without her - she was here almost since I was, so we shared a lot of SA experiences. Okay...I digress...on July 10th...oh yeah, now I know why I digress :) We turned in the long term lease (purchase/buy-back) car Amber drove and used that money plus some I had saved to buy Kate's car. Now I have a 2005 Renault Clio to drive - don't think they have those in the states - its red and a nice car- A/C, CD player, remote, elec windows/locks - manual transmission -everything I would want in a car here. The Mazda I was driving belonged to our friends Peter and Yvonne - it was a great car, but was a 2door and no A/C and no CD player - I keep moving up in the world with my cars - better than moving down, I guess. Anyway - its a nice little car and I'm enjoying it. Sara is now driving the Mazda - we turned in her longterm lease(purchase-buyback) car last week.

I was about to tell you about the Texas team coming, but would have completely missed telling you about my trip to Drakensburg (east of Joburg in the Kwazulu Natal province) - to the mountains. (ideal spot for more pix, but blogger blues) I went abseiling - which is a lot like repelling, but you don't bounce along the cliff face - you just lower yourself down in the air once you've backed off the cliff - yep - I backed off a cliff - that was hard! The few steps down on the cliff to get to the edge were really hard. I did ask the Lord to give me courage and calmness and God did - thanks! It was okay once I was airborne - let out the rope and had a safety rope - so it was not back lowering myself down. There were six of us - 4 from Virginia (2 college students volunteering at DoH and Russell and me) and 2 from NC Baptist (one from NC and one from GA - both with collegiate missions too). We stayed at the Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge - was a decent place to stay. Met some folks from UVa Med School - small world! One of the girls was from Mechanicsville - micro world!

Went to LeSotho one day for a tour of a remote mountainous village - that was interesting - got to hear about the LeSotho history. Saw drawings that were supposedly ancient cave drawings from the early bushmen or San people - the first inhabitants of the country. The roads were very rough - was a very rural farming community. Saw a sangoma or healer - he didn't seem to be one like a witch doctor - more of a natural healer - at least from what he said. Many of the natives here do believe the spirits of ancestors are active and they can seek them for help or try to drive evil spirits away - so its something I stay away from.

The last day in Drakensburg, we went on a big hike. The guide said it was of medium difficulty and I guess it was if high difficulty means you're rock climbing with ropes and stuff. I was worried about being able to make it - a 12 Km hike up to the top of a mountain. I expressed my concern to the guide the day before while we were in LeSotho and also to my team - wondering if it would be wise for me to go since I know I'm not in shape and am at least twice as old as all the guys in my group (Yep, I'm most likely their parents' age...ugghhhhh!). Anyway, the guide and my friends encouraged me to go for it, so I did. I was tough! There was one part where we had to climb up a steep incline - climging up and over rocks - many times on all fours to get up to the top - was kind of a crevice in the side of the mountain. I was the last one up - had to stop a lot to catch my breath - high altitude, lack of cardio fitness, age, all those things combined to make it a tough climb for me. The guide, Garreth, was very patient and stuck with me the whole time - encouragine me. I finally made it - was fine once I got to the top - it was spectacular. We were high up and could see down in the valleys. Had lunch at the top. I am thankful to my friend Colton for carrying my backpack - it was like a community pack with several lunches and waters inside - but still - it was wonderful that he was willing to carry it all day.

After lunch, we went to see one of the tallest waterfalls in the world - its also one of the smallest :) Coming back down the mountain, we had to climb down chain ladders attached to the cliff face - 2 of them! It was very scary coming down them, but at least we had something to hold onto. I am thankful that I didn't have any trouble with my knees like I have in the past (Kauai, New Hampshire, Yosemite hikes with my friend Renee) - maybe my knees are in better shape than the were over 15 years ago! That would be good. I was glad after the fact that I did the trip, but it was hard!!! Maybe one day blogger will cooperate and I'll be able to post some pics - maybe do what Amber did and put them on another site with a link.

Okay, now onto the Texas team. They came to TLC and gave out the clothing for the kids - also had arranged for large food parcels to be delivered so they could be given to each family. It was very generous and a nice thing for the TLC families - there was a short program and team for everyone - was like organized chaos - but was good.

On July 29th, I left for Capetown for a week. The Texas team was going down to celebrate the official opening of a new baby house in Cape Town - it is one of the Door of Hope International projects. The Texas church is planning to kind of 'adopt' the house and provide resources and hopefully future volunteers. They have already contribute a lot of funding to purchase furnishings for the place. Also went with Cheryl to visit her relatives and friends - was nice to meet new folks and make new friends. Enjoyed her cousins that we stayed with. Was also nice to be in a different city for a bit and get out of the regular routine. Spent a few hours with the kids at the house - was interesting - the kids are in pairs - 2 infants, 2 toddlers, 2 two year olds, 2 six year olds - I spent the most time with the 2's and 6's - reading books, playing with a ball, etc. Saw the need for more toys and books, so hopefully Cheryl's cousin will be able to get donations from her church and clients to help with that.

Got back from Cape Town this morning - Sara picked me up then we went to McDonalds for lunch - typical Americans!

Oh yeah, almost forgot - Sara moved out - she is living with Kelly (a SA staffer at DOH) at the volunteer flat at the DOH baby house. Carmen and Brent (Cheryl's daughter and husband) and their 2 year old son live here now with me. Carmen is pregnant and her baby has some health issues, so it was important for them to move to Joburg for the baby - it made sense for them to live here in the flat the Allen's own until they could get a house here, so... my new roomies. I have a TV in my room, so I spend quite a bit of time here - but its cool. I'm going over to Sara's tonight to watch the season finale of Biggest Loser - I've already seen it - many reruns here, but its better than Isidingo or 7 deLaan or any other shows in Zulu, Afrikaans, Twsana or whatever.

Whew... that was long, but I think I'm all caught up - will have later posts with updates on youth and children and worship at Troyeville - lots going on. Hopefully one day there will be pictures too! For now...cheers!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://joburgventurer.blogspot.com/2008/08/yikes-over-month.html' title='Yikes! She and I went to some place that rents out really cheap Christian videos and got a few last week. I reviewed several - some were really lame - 70's and well, 70's should say it all. Anyway, there was one from the 80's done by Billy Graham's organization and it was okay, so that was the one I was going to show last night.

During the middle of worship team practice, we realized the power was out in the church (funny how you notice that when you go to switch on the lights and nothing happens). We tried to muddle through on a few songs, but it got too dark to see the words, so we gave up, had prayer and went to prayer meeting. Prayer meeting was pretty cool, we had a couple of candles on the table and prayed in the darkness. I am continually warmed by the fact that we almost always have about a dozen folks there for prayer each Wednesday night. Its a different group each week, but we carry on.

After prayer, everyone went to the hall for the bread and tea. The youth who usually show up in time for the food and then stay for Bible Study were there in force. Cheryl and I were asking ourselves and each other, what were we going to do with no power? no video, so what to do? We had people there and didn't just want to send them away. We tossed around a few ideas and came up with one that we were going to do, but then decided not too. So this is what we did...

We had everyone gather their chairs in a circle around the heater. Then we lit more candles and had about 8 candles sitting on the floor in the middle of the circle. We started with a few songs and then I asked people to share something God was doing in their lives that they wanted to praise God for and share with the people around them. Several people shared - it was really neat to sit together around the circle and hear how God has blessed people. After that, Cheryl read from the DC Talk Jesus Freaks Devotional - a selection about the Apostle John and then one about a Christian in Vietnam who stayed in prison so he could continue to share Jesus with the other prisoners. Cheryl closed us in prayer and then we all went home.

God blessed us with no power - I'm pretty sure that the people living in the community around the church didn't really see last nights power outage as a gift from God, but it was for us at Troyeville. How sweet it was to sit around the circle in the dim light and praise our Father in Heaven together. Over half the people there were youth - and of course, that was an additional blessing for me. Thanks God!

One Year!

So, yesterday was my one year anniversary of being in South Africa. Its funny because sometimes it feels like I've just arrived and other times it feels like I've been here forever. It amazes me to think that I feel comfortable here - have established a life, a routine, developed friendships, have my usual shopping places, usual groceries, usual schedule (okay maybe not that). Things will be changing over the next few months, though. Both my roomates will be returning to the states and I have no idea who will be here at the flat with me. I'm also getting involved in a new ministry with the potential to work on projects all over the country. It is in its infancy stages now, but is focused on helping orphans and vulnerable children. Will give more info once things get going with it.

I'm continuing to enjoy ministering to the youth at Troyeville. We regularly have about 15 youth on Wednesday nights for Bible study and about the same amount on Friday nights for Youth. Sunday morning varies, but averages around 15 too. Its interesting though because it is not the same 15 each time - probably a total of 30 if you counted them all up. Of course, numbers don't tell anything - I think they are feeling part of a community - part of a group that can support each others. Many of them have committed themselves to Jesus and seem to be trying to learn and grow as his followers. I love the times we can sit around the table and go through scripture together - them asking questions, me hoping and praying that I'm answering clearly and correctly. Their winter school break is coming up - hopefully there will be times to just hang out.

I'm hoping to go to at netball game tomorrow morning - I've never seen it before, but its kind of like basketball except that there is no dribbling and there is no backboard. I think only certain people are allowed to shoot. Several of the youth play, so I hope I get to go. They're supposed to call me in the morning to let me know where the game is.

There are seven Virginians here in Joburg right now - 3 college students at Door of Hope doing summer missions and 4 venturers. By September, there will be 2 - me and Russell. Hopefully there will be more on the horizon. We have about 12 teams coming from Virginia this year, so our wonderful state will be well represented here in 2008.

I'll be starting to raise funds for summer camp soon, so if you're interested in contributing to camp - helping offset the cost for the youth, see the bottom of my blog for how to contribute. If you do, make sure you note when you send the money to the VBMB that it is for Troyeville Youth Camp. They are already talking about camp and it isn't until December - how cool is that????

Its June!

Okay, so its been awhile since I updated this blog. Sorry for leaving you with the scary post about Xenophobia. We haven't had any violence related to xenophobia in the past 2 weeks. All the people that were staying in our church went home last week - I haven't heard that there have been any problems - God has answered our prayers for peace.
The gov't is now trying to figure out how to help the displaced people find homes again. The number of refugees was as high 30,000 I think - now I think it is less than 10,000. Many of the people from other African countries have gone back to their home countries - others feel they are better off in South Africa, even with the problems with xenophobia - others can't afford to go anywhere else - still others have been here so long, that SA is their home.

I'm coming up on one year - amazing how quickly it has passed. I'm most likely going to branch out in what I do here - Cheryl and I have been talking about me getting involved in a new organization that right now is called the International Door of Hope. The paper work is in with the government now to establish it as a non-profit organization. They submitted 3 names, so we don't know what its official name is. Anyway, the organization will be helping with others who are taking in orphans and vulnerable children and other organizations who are helping the disadvantaged. Seems as if there are a lot of folks who want to help kids, but they don't have the contacts or knowledge to do it legally - IDoH will help them get set up. There are others things the organization will do, its in its infancy stage now. I'm excited to be involved - in helping others - in branching out.

We had a little visitor for a couple of days this week. On Wednesday night at church, Josh found a little black kitten by Cheryl's car - he tried to find someone in the church to take it, but no one would. Amber and I decided that we couldn't leave it out in the cold, so we took it home. She was cute - we named her Shiloh. I debated with whether to keep her or not - it would have been fun to take care of her - to have a pet to cuddle - but today I realized that when you adopt, its for life and I wouldn't be here for her whole life. It would be better to take her to the SPCA while she was still young so she would have a better chance to get adopted. It was a little tough handing her over, but it was for the best.

Right now, I'm watching Freedom Writers - previewing it before showing it to the youth tonight. I figured that they are in the midst of exams, so it would be nice to see a movie tonight.

thats all for now...all is well!

Xenophobia

Xenophobia - not something I really have thought about - not even sure if I really knew what it meant. Its in the headlines here - xenophobic attacks - the dictionary says that xenophobia is unreasonable hatred or fear of foreigners or strangers - unreasonable - how true - unreasonable that people would hate and attack others for no other reason than that they are from another country or tribe.

Its been an interesting week. It actually started last week - we saw on the news that there were attacks on foreigners in Alexandria - a settlement just outside of Joburg - South Africans attacking those from Zimbabwe or Mozambique or any number of other African countries - beating them, killing some, stealing their possessions and burning their homes (shacks). Hundreds of foreigners fleeing the settlement and taking refuge at police stations - spending the night outside in a field near the station - men, women, and children. It was just a news story then.

On Sunday morning, Cheryl was told that there was more violence against foreigners - we had a special time of prayer during the service for those who were hurt, for those who were displaced, for those who were attacking, for peace.

When I returned to the church after taking the youth on a hike, a woman had come to the church seeking help - her home had been broken into - she was scared - and she wasn't a foreigner. The word we heard was that the Zulu's in the area were attacking anyone that wasn't Zulu. We saw these guys walking down the street with Zulu war sticks - sticks that have been carved so that one end is pointed and the other is like a ball - used for fighting. As I drove away from the church to take the IMB team home, it felt different - like it was volatile - like there was an air of unrest - hadn't felt that before. Seemed like everyone walking down the street was on mission - no one was just hanging out like usual.

On Monday (19th), Amber sent me a text saying that several people from the church had come there asking to stay there overnight - they were from the Congo mostly. They were scared of being attacked - of having their home's broken into and their things stolen. I understand that several children were kept home that day from school and from the preschool - parents afraid to let their children go out. Since then, there have been about 6 adults and 10 children staying in the basement at the church - seeking refuge.

I was wondering on Wednesday if we were going to have Bible study that night. Wondering if anyone would come. On Wednesday morning, I got a call from an elder in the church telling me that I should cancel youth on Friday - he had heard that there was a planned 'purge' on Friday night. A 'purge'? He said it was basically when the Zulus gather and go to the streets and 'purge' anyone who doesn't belong. The specific target being a factory near the church because a lot of people from Mozambique work there. Another leader from the church wondered if it was a good idea to cancel - that perhaps the youth would want a time together - in the church - a place to gather together in peace. I figured the best thing for me to do was to call Cheryl (she was in Capetown). She had heard about the plan for Friday too, and also recommended that I cancel. We didn't want to take a chance on any of the youth getting mistaken for foreigners as they walked home. Also, thought it would be better for me to stay out of Troyeville after dark.

Of course, the darkness was one of the reasons I was wondering about Wed. night. Turns out Wednesday was a blessing. Amber, Russell and I prayed together like we usually do on Wednesday afternoons. [the IMB team didn't come - their leader decided that it might be too dangerous) Psalm 91 was our focus. Then we had the worship team meeting. It was neat during the meeting how we came together on the songs - I would think of one that someone else thought of too. Two of the songs picked had lyrics specifically speaking fo difficult times for a nation. After the meeting we had practice - from 5 - 6. One of my guys who has been playing the drums for us came - it was surprising because he is from the Congo and he came from Berea - I was so glad he made it without incident. Then after practice we had our regular prayer meeting - but it was anything but regular.

Some of the youth were there - ones who had never come before - the ones staying at the church were there - the chairs around the table were all full. Congolese, Zulu, Xhosa, Americans, Brits, white South Africans - all gathered together to pray for peace - to pray for those who were hurting - to pray for those who were attacking - all gathered together because we believed in our Almighty God - that God was bigger than the stuff going on in the streets - big enough to bring peace. Prayers were lifted in different languages - how sweet to know that God hears and understands them all.

Then we had Bible study - again - the youth came - most of the ones who come each week were there - about 12-15 of them - all around the table studying God's word together. I LOVED it! There is one young lady who has just become a follower of Jesus - she sits there drinking in God's Word - eager to learn - I love teaching her and the rest about Jesus - helping them to understand what the words mean - its wonderful! Its thrilling to see that the youth are the majority that come each week - not for fun and games, but to study God's word together.

We left the church after Bible study - Cheryl had told us not to go home our usual way towards town, but to go on the highway, so we did. The streets were quiet - much quieter than usual - not many were out and about. Not sure if it was the cold or the fear that kept them inside.

So here I am on Thursday night - actually Friday morning now. We heard today that there were no incidents on Wednesday night. Praise God! The gov't has called in the army to help the police make sure things stay quiet. We're hoping that the attacks are over. The youth weren't happy with Friday night being canceled - they were frustrated that the actions of a few were interfering with their lives. They felt that people were taking advantage of the situation and using it as an excuse to steal.

The news says that there have been about 42 deaths and 15,000 people who have been left homeless because of the attacks - shacks destroyed or burned because they were lived in by foreigners. Several police stations are places of refuge. One of them is near Troyeville, where about 3000 are staying. The cool thing is that God's people are responding - they are feeding the foreigners who have been displaced. Door of Hope and Troyeville are sending blankets, nappies, and clothes to help. We're able to share God's love with the ones who are hurting. Blessings in the midst of pain.

The attacks have been limited to certain areas. Out where we live has been quiet - normal - our prayer is that the weekend will be quiet and that the violence will stop. I'd love to look back on this weekend and think, "turns out we could have had youth on Friday - nothing happened." Wouldn't that be sweet.

Please pray for the folks who are hurting - who don't know where to go now - pray for a return to peace between people of different tribes and nations. Pray for the children who have seen violence and death first hand - that the images would fade. Pray that through this, people would see and feel the love of God through the love of God's people.

Things I'm Thankful for

I was just thinking today about things I'm thankful for. I'm trying to be thankful - to look at the glass as half full - to see the good first - to remember the 3 C's I learned in Dale Carnegie class - Never Criticize, condemn, or complain.

Thank You Lord for it ALL

Can it Really Be May Already???

May - wow - if I were going home this year, I'd be leaving in less than 2 months - I guess that's why I'm staying longer than a year - can't imagine leaving so soon. I'm really beginning to build solid relationships with some of the youth. I really enjoy being with them - there are some that I'm sure are going to make a difference here in South Africa - if only because they are chosing to work hard and to be people of integrity. The more of those we have, the better the community.

This morning in church, Ian spoke about the Kingdom of God and how in the Lord's Prayer, Jesus prays that God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven. He talked about how for God's will to be done on earth, then we must reveal the kingdom by how we live - loving God first and loving each other. It was very afirming because I have tried to convey to the youth that being a Christian is not about rules and regulations, its about 2 things - loving God first and loving others. My prayer is that this message sinks in with the youth - only 2 things to remember.

Okay, so since I haven't posted in about a month, guess I should do an update on things...hummm since the baptismal service....well, I went home for 3 weeks - that was wonderful! It was so nice to be back with my folks and my family and my friends. I felt like I dropped back into my old life again - almost a twilight zone feeling - my room was the same, I slept in my bed - I had clothes there - my mess was there - I sat in the same chair downstairs with my Talli sharing the ottoman with me - just like home! Even more, the golf association I played with the past 2 years had started its season, so I got to play golf with my good friends Donna and Wanda and I went to Maryland and visited Becky, the Stuckers, and went to Heritage - just like always. Talli went with me to Maryland and played with Sam, I played golf with Gayle, Henry, and Bill - just like old times - was great! I also got to see cousin Amy on the way up and great friend Kathy and her family on the way back. I also had great times visiting with friends at the mission board and catching up on all the Virginia Baptist news.

Mom asked me what was the biggest most surprising change that had occurred while I've been gone for home. Actually, the biggest change was not really surprising. My nephew, Harry, has changed from a boy into a young man - he's taller than me now - his voice has changed - it was strange to see so many changes in him in just 9 months. Of course I wasn't surprised because Dad and Mom are good at keeping me updated on the goings on at home, but wow! Harry and Kendall are great people and I am thrilled to be their aunt - we went to Cici's to celebrate Harry's 15th birthday while I was home.

Another one of the highlights of my trip was going to Danville to see family. We had a big dinner at my aunt's house and lots of cousins and aunts and uncles were there - it was very special especially since I missed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter with them - something that I haven't missed before. My Aunt Nancy even let Talli come - I am grateful for that! Didn't want to board her while I was at home. I am very blessed to be a part of a family that enjoys being together and who all share the joy of faith in Jesus.

Since I've been back, well, I've gotten back into the old routine mostly. We did have a neat service on Monday, April 28th - a public holiday here in South Africa. Cheryl had been planning it since before the end of last year. She wanted to have a service of Thanksgiving to God for all the things God has done for the ministries of Troyeville, Berea, and Belleview Baptist churches, including Door of Hope and Touch Life Centre. Our church at Troyeville was packed - there was a lot of singing, reports of God's blessings, and praises to God for his great love for us. Russell organized a combined choir from all three churches - it was great to see the wide variety of folks there - from South Africa, Nigeria, the Congo, the US, the UK, Zimbabwe, etc. All God's children gathered to give praise. I have a video of the song items - wanted to capture examples of African worship - what wonderful memories!

Guess that's all for now. I've already started letting the youth know about camp in December - hoping they will start saving their money now. Of course, I know that most don't really have money to save, but wanted to get them thinking about it. If you're reading this - think about sponsoring the youth for camp in December - its a great time for them to get away from the city - have some fun - experience some great worship, and hear more about how much God loves them. It will probably cost about R600 -R700 per student which is a little less than $100 each. If you want to contribute, send it to the Virginia Baptist Mission Board marked as a donation for the Troyeville Baptist Youth Camp.

Its getting colder here - in the 50's today, rainy and windy. The church was cold! Don't know how I'm going to handle it when it gets down into the 30's. I think I've mentioned this several times before, but here it is again - there is no indoor heat here! Yesterday, Amber and I went shopping and bought space heaters for the flat. We've got a big radiator type in the lounge and right now, its actually quite comfortable - thanks God!

Easter

Today is Easter Sunday - Resurrection Day! The most important day in the history of people! It was a good day - we had church this morning - sang familiar songs - "Christ the Lord is Risen Today" and "He Lives." I had forgotten how high 'He Lives' is - yikes! I was able to hit the high F, but it wasn't very fun - actually, I only tried on one verse, then I chickened out and went low - better for those listening!

One of the songs we did was "My Redeemer Lives" - that was a kind of new one for me - we sang it at camp - its a fun one, like that! There were a lot of people out today because of the long weekend and school break - many on the worship team had to work, so weren't there to sing unfortunately.

After church, I came home and rested - hoping for a nap, but never really got to sleep - but it was nice to close my eyes for awhile. We didn't have Sunday school today, so I got home about 11:30 or so. At 1:00 pm, we (my roommate Sara, Andrea (volunteer at DoH), Drew, Mercedes, and Kelsey (IMB Missionaries) went to the Allens for lunch - it was a very nice afternoon. After lunch we played Catch Phrase - it was fun.
\
Cheryl's mom is not doing too well - she is having heart issues - an erratic heart beat that makes her light headed. She also told me that last Thursday she felt pain in her chest and nausea. She said she was feeling better today - just weak. She stayed in bed in her room all afternoon. The last time she had problems was right before Christmas - seems to come with the holidays. Hopefully, she'll regain her strength in the coming days. Cheryl seems quite worried about her.

I want to go back and let you know about our service on Thursday night. We started in the hall with a light supper and then communion. It was a nice time sitting around one large square together. There were about 60 people there including children. After the stuff in the hall, we gave people a lighted candle as they exited the hall to walk outside to the sanctuary. Inside the church, we had a cross at the front with 5 candles on it - at the hands, feet, head, and heart and no lights on, so as people came in and extinguished their candles, they only saw the lights on the cross up front. For the service, we did the Good Friday Service from "The Book of Uncommon Prayer" by Steve Case. It has readings from Psalms and also ones for Peter, Judas, and Pilate. As the readings are done, one of the candles from the cross is extinguished. There are also sound effects of the 30 pieces of silver and the hammering of the nails. I've done the service with the youth at Heritage and at Northminster - I think its a cool service - very contemplative. I hope that the folks at Troyeville liked it. I know I did. I was a bit disappointed that not many of the youth came, but I guess its hard for them to want to come to church during the week for a service.

On Friday night, Sara, Russell, Andrea and I went to see the Messiah being put on by the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra and Choir. Tony and Anne gave us their tickets since they were going out of town. It was a nice experience - I was a bit tired, so sometimes it was hard to keep my eyes open, but I did enjoy it. I especially enjoyed the selections that I had done as part of the choir at Centreville - it was neat to know I knew some of them.

Well, guess that's all for now. This week will probably drag by because I'm leaving for home a week from Monday - really really really looking forward to that!! I'm having a movie night for the youth on Friday and am opening the youth room for them to hang out on Tuesday. I like those days because its a great time to get to know them better.

Baptisms!!!

Okay, so its been a week since our Baptismal service - I really should have written last week while things were still fresh, but oh well...

Lets just say that last Sunday was fun! It was special! I've been thinking about this service for about 4-5 months now. Back in the fall/spring (depending on what hemisphere you're in) last year, I asked several of the youth who were Christians if they had been baptized and was surprised to find out that they had not. I started talking to them then about the idea.

When we started the new year - after the long summer break (mid Dec. to mid Jan), I scheduled baptism classes to be held on Sundays after Sunday school (we have service first, then Sunday school). I had 7 youth come to the 2 classes - it was so much fun! I loved sitting with them, explaining what it means to be a Christian and then what baptism was all about and why we should do it. There were several youth that couldn't come to the class because of work or other commitments, so I met with six of them over coffee or milkshakes at a local mall. Of course I loved that too - love sharing with small groups too. I told each one of them after we had gone of the material, that they needed to pray and decide whether they wanted to be baptized at the March 16th service. My desire was to make the service special for them - a time of celebration geared toward the youth.

It was interesting to see that it took most of them up until the week before to decide. Only two of the boys committed early. But all in all, as I wrote before, 10 of them decided to be baptized that day - I was thrilled! Unfortunately, one of the girls ended up having to work that day, so she will be waiting until our next baptismal service.

For the service...
I did the usual planning of the service with the worship planning team. We picked songs about commitment and following God. We had one of our IMB short term missionaries do a dance - she has danced with a company in eastern Virginia. She did two dance numbers. One of the youth also sang the song 'Unwritten' - a pop song that I really like. One of the reasons I asked her to sing that song is because I felt like it communicated that this was a new phase in the lives of the students - the rest is unwritten and they have a chance to start well again. She did a great job. She is one of the ones I met with and she had decided to wait, so I'm hoping she'll be a part of our next service. I preached a short sermon - mainly on what baptism is all about - using the notes from the classes. I got a lot of the material from a sermon by Andy Stanley from Northpoint Community Church in Atlanta. I thought he did a good job of explaining the background and origins of Baptism.

After the sermon, we all went back and changed - there was excitement in the room with the girls. I was a bit nervous, but excited as well. Unfortunately, the day was really cold and rainy - dreary outside, but bright inside! Fortunately, the water was warm! Ivan had assured me that it would be. All the baptisms went great - it's hard to describe my feelings while it was going on - I just enjoyed myself - it was great because I knew each one - even the one adult who was baptized too. She is one I had given a ride to the hospital back in Nov. Several of the youth were ones I met when I first came, so I've gotten pretty close to them - several went to camp and come to most youth things. It was a very special time and I thank God for the chance to share that experience with the youth!

After the service, we had a reception in the hall with buns and tea and coffee. Several people told me that the service was special - people that don't usually do that, so I know it was neat for others besides me. There were also a few people that approached me that day about being baptized too - how cool is that? I think we'll have another service in May or June - of course it will be getting cold then, but we can bring in some heaters for the changing room and go for it again!

Stay tuned for photos! We also video taped the whole thing - I haven't looked at it yet, but I'm sure its great. Thanks Kelsey and Drew for the photo and videography!

Baptisms!

I'm so excited! At least 8 Youth have already told me that they want to be baptized on Sunday - how cool is that??? I am hoping that the day will be special to them and that we can plan the service to that it is celebratory and a worshipful experience for them. It will be my first baptism - other than my own and practicing in Div School - I can't wait!

Saturday was lovely - I stayed at home and read a book ALL day! Really can't believe I actually did that, but I did. Read one of Francine Rivers' novels - good stories!

Saturday night Putt Putt was fun except that the course was crazy!!! All up and down hills, around corners, dropping through shafts, walking through water, hitting the ball through water - craziness! There were 10 of us - a mix of South Africans and Americans - mostly Americans - Virginia Baptists and International Mission Board Volunteers. We went for drinks afterward at M&A - my choc shake had a coffee flavor to it, but it wasn't terrible. Played a game called "I Never Have" or something like that - great way to learn things about folks! Its amazing who has been streaking and who hasn't (I haven't, by the way)!

Sunday worship was fun. Young Mi played piano, Tony, Anne, Russell and Nomalanga sang. They did some great harmonies! We sang "In the Garden" as the final hymn - it was sweet - I think I remember that it was Granny's favorite. What wonderful legacy she has - what a wonderful lady!

Went to Clearwater after church for lunch - there were 7 of us - it was fun. Was also able to buy some really inexpensive CDs from Gospel Direct. Later that afternoon, Kelsey, Drew, and Mercedes and I all went to a service at Rouxville Church - a celebration service for some Korean Missionaries sponsored by Troyeville, Berea, and Belview Baptist churches. The music was great, but the sermon was very very long - got to hear the words twice - once in Korean and once in English. I was sooooo tired - had to fight to keep my eyes open!

Of course, even though I was very tired, I stayed up until way after midnight last night - silly me! It was fun hanging out with my roommates, though. We watched a House and then talked. Will miss Amber when she goes home this summer. Guess thats all for now. Monday has been relaxing - will be house sitting for Kate and David the next two weeks - then shortly after that, I go home!!!

Friday Night

Tonight we had the first Friday night for youth since I've been here. It has been on Saturdays for awhile now (even before I came) because apparently the young leaders who were leading the Friday nights in the past were engaging in improper behavior during or after the events.

The youth haven't really been coming on Saturdays since the new year - so we are trying out Friday nights from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. We had 16 tonight. I thought that was great especially since we had a terrific thunderstorm about the time they would be walking to the church. During the storm, I went outside to let someone in the gate and lightening struck really really really close - I was scared! I crouched down by the fence - a lot of good that would do me, the fence was metal - I hurried to open the gate and get back inside! My heart was racing!

I say "We" because I've got lots of help these days - its wonderful! A Blessing! The three volunteers from IMB did a great job with the games and with helping out setting up and taking down. Russell was also there, and he was a great help as well - especially since he knows where everything is already.

I think the youth enjoyed the evening - I did a short talk on reputation. I was planning to do something else, but then while preparing and praying about tonight, I felt God leading me to talk about reputation. Next week, we'll talk about Jesus' reputation - then the next week we're having a Maundy Thursday service and won't have youth on Good Friday night. I hope many of them will come to the Maundy Thursday because we're doing the service from 'The Book of Uncommon Prayer' - its one I have done with youth groups in Maryland and Virginia and I think it is pretty awesome - very contemplative.

I had a wonderful surprise with I got home tonight after youth - my roomie from Div School, Michelle, sent me a package with goodies inside - it was wonderful! I ate Easy Mac for dinner - I was hungry and thinking all the way home what I would eat and what a great thing to have Easy Mac from home. Thanks Michelle!

Tomorrow will be the first Saturday except for when I've been out of town that I won't have youth - I'm going to enjoy the day! The only thing I have to do is fix the powerpoints for songs and the Order of Worship for Sunday morning - shouldn't take too long. We may be going to play Putt Putt tomorrow night with a bunch of Door of Hope Volunteers - we moved our roommate date to Saturday night, so we'd already planned to go out. Should be fun to be out with a big group. I also invited the IMB volunteers.

Tomorrow is my nephew Harry's 15th birthday - can hardly believe he is that old - he's a great guy and we're all very proud of him. Its 12:32 am now, so I guess I'll head to bed. It will be nice when the time in the US switches to daylight savings time so that we'll only be 6 hours ahead again - makes the phone calls a bit easier. Can't wait to get home for my visit in April - counting the days!

Bloemfontein - Free State

In the midst of the busyness from 2 weeks ago, I was preparing material to share with Youth Leaders in the Free State. The Virginia Baptist Mission Board has a partnership with Free State Baptists and a team came over to do training. The team leader, Diane, had asked Amber and I to join one of the groups (the team divided into 2 groups to train at different locations in the FS) - Amber to teach preschool teachers and me to teach youth leaders.

The teams went to Free State on Friday, Amber and I planned to join them the next Thursday. We drove to Bloemfontein Thursday morning and had lunch with the team. Later we went to a youth hostel - kind of the boarding place for kids that go to school nearby. The team had been in the schools all week and had met many of the kids. They were able to share about Jesus with the kids in several grades - how cool is that???
On Friday, we had a touristy day. (Aren't Amber and I clever? Joining the team just in time to go touring?) We all piled into a nice van and rode about 2 hours to Kimberly to see The Big Hole - yep, that's what it was called. It is a former diamond mine. We went on a tour and heard all about diamond mining and how it got started and developed over the years. After lunch, we returned to Bloemfontein in time to see Johan's (our FS Baptist leader and host) son run in the high school championship track meet. He placed 2nd in his heat and 5th overall - his folks, Johan and Velma, were quite happy with the result since he hadn't been training for very long. Later that evening, we went to Johan and Velma's house for a braai. It was a great evening - they are wonderful folks and we enjoyed a great dinner and great conversation. Oh yeah, and I got to play with Rusty - their 3-4 month old lab mix - he was very cute. It was great for me to get a puppy fix - can't wait to hug my Talli - only about 1 month to go until I see her!

Saturday was our big day - we had about 35 people, fairly evenly split over the age groups except that there were no preschool teachers, so Amber and Debbie did children together. I had about 10-12 in the youth training. I think they got something out of it - we played some games, talked a bit, shared stories, etc. I enjoyed it.

On Saturday during lunch, Johan came over to where I was sitting with Debbie, Amber, and Kevin and asked if I wanted to preach at a township the next day. I said, "not really." With much "encouragement" from Debbie and Kevin (telling me about opportunities, and God's work) I reluctantly agreed. Fortunately (maybe God's intervention?) I had brought my sermon from the week before on worship.

On Sunday, Pastor John (Khune) from Rocklands Baptist in Mangaung - a Tswana township, picked up Amber and I and took us to his church. We drove in a small bakkie with a huge starburst in the passenger side window - he said that some guys celebrating after their circumcision ritual smashed it. I am thankful that Amber went with me - thanks roomie! It was great to have a familiar and friendly face with me. When we arrived at the church, the service had already begun. There was singing and testimonies for about 1 1/2 hours I think. It was cool to hear their voices and the harmony - one person would start and the others would join in or echo back - it was very cool. there were a few songs in English sprinkled in, so we understood a bit, but not much. Many of those giving testimonies spoke in English too. When I got up the preach, Pastor John asked for a woman to interpret, but none volunteered, so he did. It was a challenge to keep my sentences short enough so that he could interpret as I went along. I had to modify the sermon a bit since some of the content spoke directly to Troyeville, but for the most part, it was the same. I felt very comfortable. Before going up, I felt like I should be nervous, but I wasn't - I was praising God and thanking God for giving me peace. I am also thankful for the opportunity - for Debbie and Kevin encouraging me to go for it! It was a neat experience that I'm glad I didn't miss because of fear.
After the service, the folks came by to shake the Pastor's hand and ours - they formed a line - once they had greeted us, they began forming a line so that everyone was greeting everyone - the line formed a circle up front and on down the aisle - it was pretty cool - definitely a loving community of faith. The youth and young adults formed a circle at the front after the service and began singing - with one going in the middle -everyone clapping and singing - it was a celebration - it was cool!

After everything quieted down, Amber and I were driving back to Bloemfontein Baptist to meet up with the rest of the team - a guy named Gift was our driver - he was very nice - a new dad.

After lunch at Bloemfontein, we went back to the guest house where we were staying - Steward House, and rested on the front porch until Johan arrived to load up and begin our journey back to Joburg. It was a great weekend - I really enjoyed hanging out with Amber, Kevin, Debbie, Nancy, Johan, and his wife Velma- a chance to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

Busyness

The past two weeks have been very full! I'm not sure where it all starts, but anyway, here's what's been going on. I was scheduled to preach at Troyeville on Sunday, February 17th - I knew that the week before was going to be extremely busy, so I asked Cheryl about possibly not preaching that day - she suggested that I try to get help with other things so that I could still prepare my sermon since she had already planned not to preach that day. Well, I tried, but I wasn't able to get out of doing the powerpoint and preparation for the worship service that day because Tony, the one who can also do the powerpoints, was out of town all week - so I couldn't off load that. Cheryl had thought that the IMB volunteers could do Youth on Saturday, but they're no longer coming on Saturdays since we've only had a few youth showing up - so, still had youth to prepare for on Saturday.

This is what the week looked like - Tuesday night Deacon's meeting, Wednesday afternoon/evening staff meeting, prayer, and Bible study; Thursday night, pick up a member of the Virginia team coming to work in Free State; Friday night, meet with rest of team to learn about the work in Free State, Saturday - youth; then have sermon and music for service ready for Sunday morning. Oh yeah, and also have material prepared to do training for youth leaders in the Free State the next weekend.

Whew, makes me tired to think about it! I was a bit stressed. God had laid on my heart to talk with the church about worship - what it is, why we do it, and why it is not just songs on Sunday morning, but should be always in everything we do. I had been thinking about it for weeks, and when I had some free time, I did some research and put thoughts together. I kind of worked that week like I used to do when in college - when really busy, I would use any spare time to get stuff done - snatching time here and there.

For Youth on Saturday, I showed a movie and we talked about what we could learn from it - it wasn't the greatest lesson, but I have to trust that God will use even my weakest efforts to communicate something good.

Saturday night, I finished up the sermon. God is so faithful! I pulled my thoughts and notes together and felt pretty comfortable on Sunday morning sharing about worship. The singing was sweet - especially when we sang 'How Great Thou Art' at the end - felt like everyone was truly worshiping. I didn't help lead that day to save my voice - the Worship team did a great job without me!

Debbie, the early arrival on the Virginia team encouraged me and prayed for me - I am thankful for her. She reminded me that God was in this and that God would guide me through the process and delivery and that God would use my efforts to God's glory.

After church on Sunday, I felt relief - I had made it - once again God had helped me up the mountain and showed me his faithfulness.

Some Cool Stuff...

Thought you might be interested in hearing about some cool stuff...

At our church in Troyeville, Pastor Cheryl started a thing where if someone memorizes 5 specific verses of scripture (the plan of salvation), then they get a new Bible. I've been promoting it with the youth, and over the past week, have given out about 4 Bibles. I think that is pretty cool - the youth are taking the initiative to memorize scripture!

For those that have already memorized the verses, I have said I will get them a yearly devotional book if they memorize either the books of the New Testament or the books of the Old Testament. Well....I've had at least 4 already take me up on that as well - how cool is that!

I just completed a 2 week Baptism class with 7 of the youth - I LOVED it! I really enjoy small groups and talking about our relationship with God and teaching them about things that they may not know about from scripture. I've told them all to pray about whether they want to be baptized and to let me know. One has already told me that he wants to be. We have a baptism service scheduled for March 16th. I want that to be a really cool experience for those who walk through the waters - a celebration of their public declaration that they are on Jesus' team!

In January, we started a new format for our Wednesday night Bible study - we're studying the Gospel of Luke by showing a video that has the scriptures quoted while showing a dramatization of the action. Then we break into small groups to answer questions and discuss the chapter for the evening. I said I would lead a small group of youth and have been promoting it with them. Well, we've had about 5-12 youth every week so far - way cool! Also, some of my graduates who are working on weekends now and can't come on Saturday or Sunday, have been coming on Wednesday nights - yay! I really miss them on the weekends, but and thrilled that they come on Wednesday - not only so I can see them, but also because they are staying connected to the church and hopefully to God!

Its been a challenge on Saturdays for Youth Group - only a few have been coming. The first week after my Capetown holiday, 9 came. The next week 4, the next week 3, the next week 5 - it is easy to get discouraged. But, the ones that are coming want to be there it seems. Several of them are new to the youth group and have been very faithful in coming on Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays. I know that numbers aren't the measure of success - what matters is that these ones who come are learning how much God cares for them and wants to be a part of their lives. Oh yeah, and, because of the low turnout, we're going to try Friday nights in March to see what happens. I've got 3 short term missionaries from the IMB to help me implement the first ones - should be fun...stay tuned!

The Sun is Out!

Its Sunday - the Sun is out - actually it came out yesterday too, but this is the first time I've been able to write since it did. Its been rainy and cool forever it seems, but mainly all this week. I am really enjoying just sitting around - watching TV - catching up on my blog - and not having to prepare anything for tomorrow!

Its hard to think of what to write...lets see...I guess the latest news for me is that I've decided to stay beyond one year - I wanted to be very sensitive to what God was leading me to do, so I tried to wait and pray. One of the things that was pressing on me was what to do about Talli. As I wrote in a previous post, I didn't think my folks would want to keep her longer than one year. Back before I left in June, I had talked with my friend Michelle about her and Brent taking Talli, but they didn't want to take her temporarily because it might have been difficult for their girls to let her go when I returned. I wrote to Michelle about taking Talli this time for good - it broke my heart to talk about it, but I wasn't sure what else to do. (I cried every time I thought about it.) Michelle thought they would be interested so we agreed to think about the possibility. Meantime, Mom and Dad read my post about thinking about giving Talli up and wrote me to say that they would keep her - they actually enjoy having her around - isn't that too cool! Dad even said that Mom said she would miss her if she was gone. So, with Talli taken care of and the VBMB being okay with me extending my stay, and Cheryl wanting me to remain, I figured that must be God's way of saying, 'stay.' It was still several weeks before I finally said okay - guess I wanted some type of divine sky writing or something. I was thinking about it one day and thought God must be thinking, "Okay, Carol, what else to you need????"

My other news...is that I've got shingles. Can you believe it? I come half way around the world and get shingles. I've never heard of anyone my age getting it - usually it happens to older people, at least in my experience, but after I was diagnosed, I heard of a younger friend who has had it. The good thing is that we have a medical clinic right down the road from where we live and it was recommended to us by the Allens. I was able to get an appointment the day I called and the doctor looked at my rash and immediately diagnosed the problem. It hasn't been as painful as I've heard shingles can be - mainly itchy and sensitive. It makes sitting a challenge because the main rash is in the middle of my back, so I sit with pillows. I'm on anti virals and put caladryl on regularly. I've got pain meds in case the pain comes, but I'm hoping that I'll be one of those low percentage folks who doesn't get the bad pain.

Actually having shingles this week complicated things a bit more than I would have liked - this was my week to preach and yikes! it was hard to focus on the message while I was itching and unable to sit back in my chair - but I made it through - God answered a lot of prayers - both mine and Cheryl's. Our service today was a consecration service for all those who serve in the ministry at Troyeville. I did a 4 part sermon so that we could intersperse prayers for groups of people with sermonettes, song items, and readings. I enjoyed having a service that was different from the usual format.

This week I get to meet the 3 IMB short term missionaries who will be helping us with the ministries at Troyeville. I'm hoping that perhaps they can help me do some special events with the youth. I'm also preparing for a Baptism class I'll be doing with the youth the next three weeks. Most, if not all, of the youth who are Christians have not been baptized yet. I going to meet with them for the next 3 weeks after church to talk about what baptism is and why its a good idea to follow Jesus and get wet.

Hope your week is fantabulous and that you sense God's presence all day every day.

Stay tuned...

Sitting in the Dark...

Okay, so this post is not really about sitting in the dark, but I am actually sitting in the dark, so it seemed like an appropriate title - especially because I couldn't think of anything creative. I'm sitting in the dark because the power company here in South Africa does something they call "load sharing" which is really a rolling blackout. Seems as if they don't have enough electricity to support the demand so they shut it down in certain areas for a few hours. This is our second night in a row. Fortunately, so far, ours has gone off at about 8 pm, so we have time to fix supper before it goes. Cheryl told me that theirs was off from about 5 pm, so she couldn't cook.

A lot has transpired since December 27th - my last post. For Cape Town, I'm just going to give some highlights. Suffice it to say that I had a wonderful time - loved it!

Amber and I did manage to leave the flat and get to the Allen's to pick up Richard by 4:30 am - loaded him up and then went to pick up Cheryl's brother Steven and his dog Minky - yep, we gave them a ride to Capetown. The trip took about 16+ hours - we stopped a few times and the stops were much longer than we anticipated thanks to our extra passengers.

We stayed in an area called Clarmont in a nice 2 BR 2BA house - thanks to the Turcks for having us house sit and to Richard's cousin for the connection. The house had a nice view of the side of Table Mountain. (see the view!)

Went to a bunch of beaches - all different - all great! Can I just say that one of the best things for me about Cape Town was that when we were at the beaches, we could walk freely - there were no walls - no real worries about being robbed or mugged - it was wonderful to be outside and enjoy long views! The beaches we went to: Nordhoek, Fishhoek, Camps Bay, Gordon's Bay, the Strand (near Gordon's Bay), and Bloeberg (sp?)

(picture is from Bloeberg one very windy afternoon!)

Went to Cape Point - hiked up to the light house there - the place most understand to be the meeting of the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans (we read that its really not, but oh well) also saw the Cape of Good Hope. It was very very windy up there - if I were smaller, I would have worried about being blown off the hill!!

Went to Boulders Beach - the place where the SA Penguins live - penguins living on the beach and not in snow - how about that??? One of them pecked Richard on the foot because he stepped too close.

Saw several sun sets on the beach - loved that - took way too many pictures, but hey, what's the point of having digital if you can't take pictures with abandon! Figured I could delete whatever didn't come out anyway.

Got sunburn the day we went to Cape Point - yes, I did put on sun screen - but, I think it was too old and didn't do the trick - hated that, but I tried to avoid it! really!

Went to the top of Table Mountain via a cable car - was very cool to be up top and look out over the city and the beaches. Saw a sunset from there too!

Watched the entire Jason Bourne trilogy - really enjoyed them - something nice to do on the cooler rainy days. Fortunately there weren't too many of them!

Went to St. James church - was a place where freedom fighters opened fire dand killed several during an evening service during the Apartheid years - the way the church handled themselves afterwards was a testimony to the nation.

Spent New Year's Eve down at the Harbor - went through markets - to a humonguous mall - heard live music at an outdoor amphitheater - saw hundreds of people - we left at about 11:45 pm to avoid the mass exodus. Brought in the new year in the car - counting down with the radio. We did pull off the side of the road to watch the fireworks over the harbor - pretty cool.

We left Cape Town on Friday the 11th at about 5:15 am and drove back to Joburg. Took only 14 1/2 hours on the way back - less stops, less time at stops, less passengers.

I'm really glad we went - it was great to be out of the city - it was great to be by the ocean - it was wonderful to have unobstructed views of God's creation. Many thanks to Richard for being our tour guide and friend during the trip.
